TOEFL Preparation Course

           The following lesson plans were designed for a 12 week  course for Ecuadorian English teachers with varying levels of English between high beginner and intermediate. The course took place once a week for two hours. The goal was to provide the teachers with the strategies that are needed to pass the TOEFL test. Below you will find samples of the lessons used in the course. There is at least one lesson for each of the four skills. At the end of the page, you will also see an assessment plan to evaluate the participants' progress.

Context Clues

Context Clues

The first section of the TOEFL test is reading. It varies between 60-80 minutes and consists of 3-4 texts. One of the skills that is needed on the TOEFL test is how to determine the meaning of a vocabulary word using context clues. This presentation includes the lesson plan, a PowerPoint presentation, and handouts for the participants.

Paraphrasing

Paraphrasing

One of the most important skills on the TOEFL test is the ability to paraphrase. This is particularly important on the reading section of the test. The following presentation includes a lesson plan, a PowerPoint presentation, and worksheets to help the participants practice their paraphrasing skills.

Note-Taking


Note-Taking

The second section of the TOEFL test is listening. The listening section is 60-90 minutes and one of the most important skills needed to succeed is the ability to take effective notes. This presentation focuses on teaching the participant note-taking strategies and provides them opportunities to practice those skills. Included in the presentation are the lesson plan, the PowerPoint presentation, and handouts.

Independent Speaking

Independent Speaking

The third section on the TOEFL test is speaking which includes 6 tasks and lasts 20 minutes. On the speaking section there are independent and integrated tasks. This presentation will focus on preparing the participants for the independent speaking tasks. Included in this presentation are the lesson plan, the PowerPoint presentation, and handouts.

Independent Writing

Independent Writing

The writing section is the last section on the TOEFL test. It consists of two tasks of which one is an independent writing task and the other is an integrated writing task. This presentation will focus on the independent writing task. Included are the lesson plan, the PowerPoint presentation, and two handouts.

Assessment

        The following samples include an assessment for each separate TOEFL skill: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The course includes three sessions per skill and at the end of the three sessions, the students will be given an assessment testing that specific skill. At the end of the 12-week course, the students will be tested on the overall format and strategies needed for the exam as well as take a practice TOEFL exam at home. For grading on the writing and speaking sections, the students will send the teacher the recordings and essays. All grading will be done using the TOEFL rubrics and guidelines.
