Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language

Learning Outcome 9

"Students will demonstrate professional and collaborative interpersonal skills."

Professional and collaborative interpersonal skills are an integral part of teaching because within an educational institution, teachers work together in a team. Sharing ideas and resources can help improve the overall education in a school. This learning outcome is particularly relevant to my Peace Corps experience because every day I worked side-by-side with ten English teachers. As a TEFL Peace Corps volunteer, the main responsibility is to improve the methodology and teaching strategies used in the classroom by the English teachers at the school. Therefore, I planned and taught classes together with the English teachers at my school. Besides teaching with my co-workers, I also offered training sessions to raise the level of education at both my secondary high school and throughout the country. The theoretical knowledge that I learned while on campus at Gonzaga University prepared me to feel confident presenting on topics such as the communicative approach, chunking and scaffolding, listening strategies, differentiated learning and rubrics. On this page, you will find pictures from the teacher training sessions as well as a video from one of the teachers at my school who briefly describes her experience working closely with me.
